Surfing Uluwatu, World-Class Waves on Bali's Southern Tip
Uluwatu is one of Indonesia's most famous surf spots. Get to know its waves before paddling out.
Uluwatu on the Bukit Peninsula in southern Bali has long drawn surfers from around the world. Its waves break over a reef, producing long left-handers.
When to go
The dry season, roughly April to October, usually brings south-easterly winds that blow offshore along Bali's west coast, making the waves cleaner.
Who is it for?
Because it breaks over reef, Uluwatu is best for experienced surfers. Beginners should learn on sandy beaches such as Kuta or Batu Bolong in Canggu with an instructor.
- Watch the tides—some sections get too shallow at low tide.
- Respect the line-up and local surfers.
- Wear reef booties and sunscreen.
After your session, watch the sunset and the Kecak dance at Uluwatu Temple perched on the cliffs.
