Lake Toba and the Batak Heritage of Samosir Island

The world's largest volcanic lake hides an island at its centre, traditional Batak houses and an astonishing geological story.

Lake Toba and the Batak Heritage of Samosir Island

Lake Toba in North Sumatra is Indonesia's largest lake and the largest volcanic lake in the world. It was formed by a supervolcanic eruption tens of thousands of years ago, and the Toba Caldera is now recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark.

Exploring Samosir Island

In the middle of the lake lies Samosir Island, reachable by ferry from Parapat or Ajibata. The Tuktuk Siadong area is the main accommodation hub, with a relaxed lakeside atmosphere.

  • Tomok – home to the stone tomb of King Sidabutar and Sigale-gale puppet performances.
  • Huta Bolon Simanindo – a museum and traditional Toba Batak houses with distinctive carvings.
  • Green hills – perfect for cycling with lake views.

Local flavours

Try ikan mas arsik, carp cooked with andaliman—a Batak spice that leaves a citrusy, slightly numbing tingle on the tongue.
