Etiquette for Visiting Sacred Sites in Indonesia
Temples, mosques and historic churches are active places of worship. Here is how to visit politely.
Indonesia has many sacred places that are also tourist attractions. They remain active places of worship, so visitors should mind their behaviour and dress.
General guidelines
- Dress modestly: cover shoulders and knees. At Balinese temples, wear a sarong (kamen) and sash—often available to borrow at the entrance.
- Remove your shoes when entering mosques or designated areas.
- Never climb on buildings, shrines, statues or stupas.
- Don't step on offerings (canang) placed on paths or in front of buildings.
During ceremonies
Give worshippers space, never stand higher than priests, and ask before taking photos. Some sites also restrict drones.
Respect local rules
Some temples have customary rules, including for women who are menstruating. Read the information boards and follow the instructions of site managers.
