Labuan Bajo, Gateway to Komodo National Park
This harbour town on the western tip of Flores is the starting point for adventures to the Komodo dragon habitat, the savanna hills of Padar Island and pink-sand beaches.
Labuan Bajo, on the western tip of Flores in East Nusa Tenggara, was once a quiet fishing village. Today the harbour town is the main gateway to Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991 and home of the giant Komodo dragon.
Padar Island and its three bays
The most iconic view is from the top of Padar Island. After a 30–45 minute climb on a stepped trail, visitors are rewarded with a panorama of three bays with differently coloured beaches. Go before sunrise to avoid the heat and catch the best light for photos.
Meeting the dragons safely
Komodo dragons can be seen on Komodo and Rinca islands. Visits must be accompanied by a ranger who understands the animals' behaviour. Keep your distance, stay quiet and follow all instructions.
Best time to visit
- The dry season (roughly April–November) brings calmer seas for sailing.
- Choose a liveaboard trip on a traditional phinisi boat to explore several islands at once.
- Bring drinking water, a hat and reef-safe sunscreen.
Tip: check the Labuan Bajo forecast on our Weather page before crossing, especially during seasonal transitions.
