Climbing Rinjani, a Guide to Segara Anak Crater Lake
Rising 3,726 metres, Rinjani offers a challenging trek and a stunning crater lake. Here is how to prepare.
Mount Rinjani in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, is Indonesia's second-highest volcano at 3,726 metres. Inside its caldera lies Segara Anak lake and an active young cone, Mount Barujari.
Popular routes
- Sembalun – open savanna, the favourite route to the summit.
- Senaru – through dense tropical forest, often used for the descent or to reach the lake.
Treks typically last 2 to 4 days, depending on whether you go to the crater rim, the lake or the summit.
Essential preparation
- Register through the national park's official system and use licensed guides and porters.
- Train for several weeks beforehand, especially leg endurance.
- Bring a warm jacket—pre-dawn temperatures at the summit can be very cold.
- Trails are usually closed temporarily during the peak rainy season; check official announcements from the Rinjani National Park office.
